Calligraphy Robot, 2023

Arabic calligraphy is more than an art form: for centuries, it’s been a vessel for knowledge, culture, and language. Calligraphy Robot at the welcome center of Qatar Foundation’s headquarter in Doha brings this rich heritage to life. 
 
Blending robotics with interactive, audiovisual storytelling, the installation takes guests on a journey through time. As its pen moves, vivid strokes illuminate the table, uncovering the mysteries of Arabic scripts — from the 5th-century Al–Jazm to the refined ‘Six Pens’ styles. 
 
Visitors can try their hand at writing in Arabic by tracing the phrase “Knowledge is light.” We used this common Arabic expression to highlight the Foundation’s pursuit of education, research, and innovation. As a souvenir and final touch, guests take home a personalized bookmark with their name elegantly written in Al Thuluth script.
